Winter Sanctuary Is Back !!

What is the Winter Sanctuary?

The Winter Sanctuary Program is a seasonal emergency shelter program sponsored by the County of Sacramento through the Department of Human Assistance, in conjunction with support from the Sacramento faith-based community and administered and operated by First Step Communities. 

How do I get signed up?

All  guests seeking our services are required to register through our intake centers to verify eligibility for Winter Sanctuary. 


We are a low barrier shelter that stresses the importance of our guests striving to get along with each other.

Are there any rules?


Guests must be at least 18 to register for our Winter Sanctuary. Transitional Aged Youth (18 to 24) are encouraged to sign up at the Wind Youth Intake Center.  All guests are required to sign an agreement. Click the image on the left to see a larger version of our rules and agreements.

Am I allowed to bring my things to the sanctuary?

Yes, you can. After you have registered for our sanctuary, you are allowed to bring two bags to the church. Anything extra is stored in our storage room.


We also have a pod for bike storage.

What services do you provide at the sanctuary?

We provide

  • dinner

  • sleeping bags

  • transportation

  • a safe, comfortable "place to be" from 3:00pm to 7:00am the following morning.

All guests must utilize the (Free) RT Transportation provided to and from our intake centers and the host churches.

Do you need donations?

We are in need of the following items/donations in addition to financial support:

  • Working PCs and printers

  • Working DVD player

  • Folding tables and chairs

  • Games, card decks, etc

3PM: Opening time at Intake Sites.

Registered guests may enter.

515PM: Bus leaves Main Intake Center

6PM: Guests arrive at host church

6PM: Sanctuary Activities at host church

11PM: Most guest are asleep

5AM: Guest are woken up

6AM: Buses leave host church for Intake Centers

7AM: Buses arrive at Intake Centers
