THE COMMUNITY CENTER
The essence of the First Step Community (FSC) is the community center which will contain communal facilities. These will include restrooms, showers, laundry, commercial grade kitchens, and dining areas, as well as areas for service provision supported through collaborative partnerships. FSC working with WellSpace Health, has designed exam rooms to meet OSHPA requirements for a full-time healthcare clinic, allowing the facility to open its doors to serve the greater community. FSC will provide primary healthcare and mental health counseling services in the community center through a collaborative partnership with WellSpace Health.
Additional partnerships are planned and will lead to the provision of mental health and substance abuse counseling, legal services, domestic violence counseling, job search and job readiness preparation, and life skills and nutritional training. Prospective collaborative partners include the following and others:
Legal Services of Northern California (LSNC) – providing legal support services;
Sacramento Multiple Advocates Resourcing Together (SMART) Program – helping residents navigate the Social Security Disability/Supplemental Security Income application process; and others as required.
Sacramento Self Help Housing - mentoring residents for housing programs and providing a portion of our exit strategy.
Next Move - mentoring residents for housing readiness programs and providing a portion of our exit strategy.
Employment Mentoring - First Step intends to provide employment readiness training and on-site job assignments that will be coordinated with potential employment opportunities.
If, at a future date, it is deemed that shelter and residential services are no longer needed for the area, the community center and medical clinic would remain on the site and transferred to the city and local community for further use.
